![]() The Soundhouse - 27th June 2003 The gig last night was only the second I've been to at the Soundhouse and I was impressed again by the venue. Although it would have benefited from a bigger crowd (and a bit more rucking at the front!) the bands sounded nice and sharp and best of all, there was space for those who wanted to stand and drink and those who didn't! Magic! First up were Thee Exit Wounds...frankly they were nuts! Very very good, although some dodgy American accents and quality bass playing all round! I really liked their sound, sort of Country Rock speeded up and given a kick up the arse, but romped through a number of crowd pleasers such as "Deadwood". They went down very well with the audience. Next up were a streamlined Filaments. They sounded as good as they always have done. Nice to see them back in Essex again actually, becuase they've been everywhere (even cropped up a couple of times in foreign Punk magazines!). They went through a couple of classics such as Thrown Away, UK Now and Trevor before moving onto some new stuff like Bastard Coppers. They always have a stage presence but to see them all dancing around with trombones, saxes etc. is something else! Lastly were The Big. These guys play good fast ska, and there was quite a lot of skanking going on down below! Extra, Essex Wanker, Shit Fuck Bollox etc...Mobile Phone were all played at breakneck speed! Watch out for these lads on the 21st playing some old time ska classics! My last words...Great gig, great atmosphere, nice that alternative music in Essex finally has another home! Big thanks to Sean and all the bands for making it all happen and see you all next time! |
